Canada
matt | March 13, 2009I have not updated the blog very recently but being in Canada with little
access to internet does not help. This week I am racing Canadian Nationals
in Duntroon, ON and have completed one race already. I am staying with the
Sun Valley ski team and so far it has been a good week even though the
weather situation has been challenging to say the least.
First off, I was not even sure I was going to get on the plane in
Minneapolis because of rumors that all the snow had melted in Duntroon from
the near 60F temps the few days prior. I decided to get on the plane and
flew into Toronto. There was no snow in Toronto and basically no snow in
the entire region except on the Nordic trails and the alpine area.
I skied Sunday in ankle deep slop and raced the 10k on Monday after it got
cold over night and snowed an inch. The race went well but my skis where
not quiet right for the conditions. The only thing that kept them in
contention was great waxing from Will and Travis, coaches from Maine Winter
Sports and Sun Valley Ski Education. I was 9th place, 2nd American, 43sec
out. I was happy with the result but felt a little flat. Friday I will ski
the classic sprint which for me will be a warm up race for the 50k
freestyle on Sunday. I am really excited for the 50k skate and if I am
feeling good and have good skis hope to challenge for the win. The only
problem is possible rain and 60F temps over the next day or two. I hope the
snow survives.
