Surprise!

matt | November 28, 2008

I am in West Yellowstone after deciding last night to fly out and race.  The remainder of the SuperTour races for the 1st half of the season got axed so West is it.  I am hoping I can race before I start to feel the affects of the altitude.

I’ll update with results tomorrow.

Also, Grant sent me a good luck email so I’ll try to post that as well… very cute… but I cant get the pic to download right now so I’ll try to post that tomorrow as well.

Happy Thanksgiving!

matt | November 27, 2008

I love any holiday which involves eating… isn’t that all of them?  Right now I am in the Twin Cities and will be having Thanksgiving at home for the first time in 4 years.  It will be a lot of fun to enjoy Turkey Day with Marybeth and Grant and our families.  It feels a little weird not being at West Yellowstone for the fall ski festival but with the initial lack of snow and grooming out West, the UP of Michigan looked like a lot better option.  From what I have heard the races at Yellowstone will happen… not on the ski trails but up high in the mountains.  It is always hard to miss out on racing but on the flip side of that I have never raced well at Yellowstone.

My plan was to hook up with my team for next weekends races near Salt Lake City but as I was about to book my ticket last nigh my coach called and gave a grim out look for the races in Utah… they have little to no snow and it is not looking like those races will happen.  I’ll be on my toes for the next few weeks trying to get in some racing when I can but the good news is the Twin Cities have 3 options for skiing on man-made snow right now and a 4th option opening soon.

I’ll be training hard.

Nordic Walking and back in Ironwood

matt | November 23, 2008

It has been a little while since I have posted but it does not indicate any inactivity on my part.  Right now I am enjoying some good ski training in Ironwood; I was suppose to be in West Yellowstone for ski training and racing but there was a lack of snow initially so my Dad and I headed to the UP for skiing instead.  I have been very busy between my last trip to the UP and this trip.  I did some trail work on the Birkie ski trail with my team and also VO2max tested in Hayward.  Both activities went very well.

This past week I did some nordic walking clinics at the General Mills Offices.  My friend Heidi Teoh was nice enough to help set up the clinics.  I had 26 people come to the clinics and everyone had a great time.

I have been enjoying early season skiing with my Dad, Marcus Magnuson and Grant Moose

Skiing on the real stuff

matt | November 11, 2008

The UP got snow this past weekend so I decided to make the 4.5hr trip from the Cities to get on the real thing.  It has been about 7 months since I’ve been on my XC skis.  The family came with me and I was greeted in Ironwood by some other skiers from the Twin Cities… Kuan and Garrot Teoh and Peter Hanson.  The skiing was very good for early season.  I put in a 2.5hr skate ski at ABR ski area in the morning and did a 2hr classic ski at Wolverine ski area in the afternoon.  Also, it was Grant’s first time on snow… I don’t think he understands how to play in it yet.
