Family Reunion

matt | October 8, 2008

This past weekend was the family reunion for Marybeth’s mom’s side of the family.  It is a yearly gathering at the family dairy farm just outside Cumberland, Wisconsin.  The food was great and I ate way too much but I had a great time.  Most exciting thing had to be the hay ride.  I will post some pics when I get home from work today.

On training, things have been low key.  My ankle is getting better fast but I am being cautious this time around so I don’t re-injure myself… this has happened in the past.  A very fun workout I did this weekend was night time mountain biking.  I hadn’t workout on Saturday when I got back from the farm so I decided to go biking… I can bike with little or no pain.  Instead of staying on the bike paths I decided it would be fun to go single track riding in the dark.  If one is going to try single track in the dark I would highly recommend a strong headlamp.

In other family news my brother in-law got his first deer last weekend.  He shot a buck while bow hunting on the family land near Nevis, MN so I am looking forward to an excessive amount of deer jerky.

Kayaking

matt | October 2, 2008

It was a nice morning on Medicine Lake. Dave and Josie Nelson have a garage full of boats so I thought I would try to get in some training and hit the water for a paddle. The ankle is getting better very fast and tomorrow I may try to double pole on it. It does not hurt anymore but it has some great color and some throbbing. I am working on regaining some flexibility I lost from the injury by doing self message and light stretching and icing. Grant and Marybeth came along and walked with Josie while I paddled… I think Grant wanted to come with me.

Back home

matt | October 1, 2008

After a long travel day on Tuesday I am back in the Twin Cities and recovering.  The airline travel was tough on the ankle, everything swelled up, but today I feel better and can walk around with minimal pain.  I still have some swelling but I have some good color.  It was a lot of fun to come home and see Grant… He got so excited to see me.  This morning I was icing my ankle laying on my back on the floor… he thinks it is a fun game to crawl all over me.

Today or tomorrow I’ll get in the pool or kayak and get in some training.  Maybe by this weekend I may be able to double pole but I think running and skate skiing are out for a while.
